Due to the current spread of COVID-19 and the necessity of keeping police employees healthy and operational, and for the protection of the public, the Charleston Police Department has decided to implement a health screening process for all employees.  As the presence of a fever has been shown to be a strong indicator of the presence of COVID-19 per the CDC, all CPD employees are required to take their own temperature prior to starting each workday.  In meeting this new requirement, employees may choose to either take their temperature at home or at their place of employment.

Should an employee take their temperature at home and have a fever (100 degrees F or more) or have any other symptoms of COVID-19, the employee must not come to work.  The employee must contact the Lead Health Coordinating Officer (LHCO) who will direct the employee through the CPD COVID-19 protocol. The employee should contact his or her supervisor to let them know they are sick and are contacting the LHCO.  Otherwise, if the employee is sick for any reason, the employee should not come to work.

Should an employee choose to take their own temperature at work, they must utilize a designated temperature taking station.  Each station will be equipped with disinfectant wipes and gloves for protection.  Each station will also be located in a place that ensures privacy of the employee while the employee takes his or her temperature.

The temperature taking device will be a laser type device which is held away from, and does not touch the forehead.  The employee will don gloves when in use.  Once complete, the employee will properly dispose of the gloves and wash their hands. The employee will also wipe the device with disinfectant wipes provided at the temperature station.

Should the employee have a temperature of 100 degrees F or above, the employee must leave work and contact the LHCO for further direction through the CPD COVID-19 protocol. The employee must also contact their supervisor and let them know they are sick and are in contact with the LHCO.

The LHCO will maintain separate records for each employee in a locked cabinet to ensure employee privacy.
LHCO may be reached at:

Each facility/team will have a station set up for temperature taking preferably near an entrance and at a location that maintains employee privacy.  Each station should have appropriate cleaning equipment.  Additionally, each station should have clear operating instructions.  Finally, the thermometer should be not be kept in the leather-type case that it comes in, but should be kept in the box, to avoid contamination.

These protocols are being put into place to protect employees of the Charleston Police Department and the citizens we serve.  Due to the fact that the virus continues to rapidly and easily spread, we are taking every step to ensure the safety of our personnel.  This protocol is another preventative measure, similar to the PPE that was distributed, to protect our personnel.
